ST. PAUL, Minn. – A new Minnesota law going into effect Wednesday aims to reduce PFAS, or forever chemicals, across the state.
Pollution Control Agency Assistant Commissioner Kirk Koudelka says 11 product categories are impacted. They are carpets and rugs, cleaning products, cookware, cosmetic, dental floss, fabric treatments, children’s products, menstruation products, textile furnishings, ski wax and upholstered furniture. Those will be banned if they have intentionally added PFAs.
Koudelka says consumers may notice some packaging differences.
“We anticipate that folks will probably see more products that are advertising that they are PFAS free,” Koudelka says. “But behind the scenes, those with PFAS will be removed from the shelves, and so what they’ll see probably is still the products on the shelf, but more advertising noting that they are PFAS free.”
Koudelka says a near total ban on PFAS in products will take effect in 2032.
