FARGO (KFGO/KVRR) — A Fargo city commissioner and former Blue Cross-Blue Shield of North Dakota executive is speaking out after the deadly shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
Commissioner Denise Kolpack was the Senior Vice President of Brand and Communications at Blue Cross-Blue Shield for 16 years. Her role involved branding and advertising for the company and its insurance plans.
“It’s a very complex industry, and I know it continues to have issues as health care costs increase and premium costs increase, but violence is never the answer,” Kolpack said.
Kolpack’s comment comes after many people have expressed confusion or disdain with health care and insurance costs, including celebrating Thompson’s murder.
“It’s a tragedy and it’s horrible to see that if someone is concerned about an issue or we’re in a society where the answer is killing somebody. I’m concerned about civility when it rises to that level,” Kolpack said.
Blue Cross-Blue Shield of North Dakota released a statement about the shooting, saying, “Our thoughts and condolences are with Mr. Thompson’s family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time…We are always enhancing those programs to make sure we are maintaining a secure environment where everyone feels safe and protected.”
Kolpack no longer works for Blue Cross-Blue Shield, but said she has received threats as a commissioner. She said there are protocols in place to protect commissioners.
