FARGO (KFGO) – A former Cass County Sheriff’s deputy has been charged with 10 counts of having child pornography and his wife has been placed on administrative leave while the investigation is underway.
Carson Quam is accused of having images of children having sex with adults on his phone. His wife, Kayla, is also with the department.
“We didn’t want to jeopardize the investigation in any way,” Sheriff Jesse Jahner says. “So, she’s been on administrative leave. We don’t know what her involvement is because we can’t start our internal [investigation] on her until the criminal portion on Carson is all wrapped up because, again, we don’t want to jeopardize that criminal case.”
Carson Quam resigned in September after Jahner learned of the criminal investigation. He’s accused of having child pornography on his phone showing adults having sex with children believed to be between the ages of 2 and 14.
Jahner says Kayla Quam’s employment status will be determined later. The Quams worked in the department’s patrol division.
Jahner says the case has been a strain on his department. The Grand Forks County State’s Attorneys Office is handling the case of Carson Quam and also that of another deputy, Darin Viken, who ran the department’s 24/7 alcohol screening program before he was placed on leave pending the outcome of a criminal investigation. The North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation is also investigating that case.
Deputy Philip Larson was also recently charged in Clay County with providing alcohol to a minor.
