FARGO (KFGO/KVRR) — A possible sex offender treatment center in Fargo is facing pushback because of its potential location.
STAND Sex Offender Treatment facility is planned for the former Cornerstone Bank building on South University Drive.
Neighbors have raised concerns and questions of the location because it would be close to the YWCA, three elementary schools, and other child care centers.
Opponents of the proposed location gathered at The Bowler to share their concerns. Most of them are against it being opened near places where kids gather.
“So thankful for everyone who showed up tonight to advocate for their own kids, to advocate for their community. It’s a blessing to see all these people here and it showcases the amount of passion that they have for making our neighborhood great,” said Trisha Pearson, a community organizer.
State Rep.-Elect Desiree Morton, a Fargo Republican, said she doesn’t think it makes sense to put people that are struggling with this sort of a problem around children.
“That would be a temptation to them,” Morton said.
STAND filed a permit with the city to remodel the former bank building across the street from The Bowler in October. It’s still awaiting approval.
