CASSELTON, N.D. (KFGO) – A 75-year-old man is dead and a 72-year-old woman was injured when their SUV slammed into the trailer of a jackknifed semi on Interstate 94 Wednesday.
The crash happened about 12 miles west of Casselton around 6:20 p.m.
The Highway Patrol says the semi was eastbound when the driver braked after seeing two other semis jackknifed in the median. The driver lost control and his semi also jackknifed with the truck coming to a stop in the median and the trailer blocking both lanes of the Interstate.
The SUV hit the trailer and got wedged underneath.
The man driving the SUV died at the scene. The woman suffered serious injuries. Both had to be extricated from the vehicle.
The woman was taken to Sanford Hospital in Fargo.
The driver of the semi, a 37-year-old man, was not hurt.
The Highway Patrol says the Interstate was ice-covered and visibility was reduced at the time of the crash.
The crash is under investigation and more information about the people involved is expected Friday.
