EAGAN, Minn. (KFGO-WCCO) – Governor Tim Walz spoke in Minnesota Friday for the first time since Tuesday’s loss on the Democratic presidential ticket alongside Presidential candidate Kamala Harris. The Harris-Walz ticket was defeated by former President Donald Trump who will return to the White House for a second term.
Appearing in front of a giant American flag, Walz began by joking about a very busy campaign schedule that took him across the country on a whirlwind tour, and kept him largely absent from Minnesota.
“I don’t know about you, but I’ve had a week. So I know you have too,” Walz said. “But, let me just start out by saying it’s great to be home. It’s great to be home.”
The governor also took time to speak directly to voters who might be worried about what comes next under a Donald Trump presidency. Walz says as long as he’s governor, he’ll work to protect the rights of Minnesotans, including the right to an abortion, adding that there’s still more work to do.
Walz reaffirmed his commitment to his role as Minnesota governor, where he has two more years to serve in his current term, and pledged to do more when it comes to working with those who don’t share his same political belief
“I think sometimes we can be quick to judge people who don’t agree with us, to assume that they act out of cruelty or fear or self-interest,” says Walz. “I don’t think that kind of judgment is helpful right now and I don’t think it’s right. I think we ought to swallow, and this is me in this, as I’m speaking about myself, swallow a little bit of pride. And look a little harder to find common ground with our neighbors.”
Walz made his remarks from Eagan High School in the south metro in front of a vocal group of supporters. He was introduced by his wife Gwen who gave a fiery speech of her own.
