ITHACA, N.Y. (UND Athletics)– No. 6/7 North Dakota suffered a 4-1 defeat to No. 9/8 Cornell on Friday night from Lynah Rink in Ithaca, N.Y.
Cornell (1-0-0) struck for a trio of goals in the opening 12 minutes and rode the strong play of reigning All-American goaltender Ian Shane and his 23 saves to take down the Fighting Hawks (3-3-0) in the series opener.
Dylan James (3) potted the lone goal for UND in the loss, while goaltender T.J. Semptimphelter was pulled after allowing three goals on four shots. Sophomore Hobie Hedquist sparkled in relief, stopping all 16 shots he saw to keep the deficit at two until an empty netter sealed the win.
Cornell got off to the start it wanted in its home opener, striking just over a minute into the game to take an early 1-0 lead, but UND answered right back as James blew by everyone and tucked home his third of the season to quickly level the score at 1-1.
The Big Red kept finding the offense, however, scoring a total of three goals on their first four shots on target to take a 3-1 lead and chase Semptimphelter from the game after only 12 minutes of play.
NoDak improved as the game wore on but was unable to solve Shane in the final 40 minutes, as Cornell skated away with a 4-1 win in the series opener.
North Dakota will go for a series split on Saturday night beginning at 6 p.m. (CT).
