KYIV, Ukraine (KFGO/KVRR) – A Fargo man who’s been helping coordinate humanitarian relief in Ukraine says tensions are quickly growing as some 8,000 North Korean troops assemble near the Ukraine border in Russia.
The Biden administration says the North Koreans are preparing to help the Kremlin fight against Ukrainian troops in the coming days.
Mark J. Lindquist has been helping deliver food, medicine, vehicles and critical supplies in Ukraine for nearly the past three years.
“For me as an American over here volunteering, it scares the hell out of me that you see this kind of escalation, this kind of alliance forming, another axis of evil between North Korea, China, Russia and Iran,” Lindquist said.
The U.S. has estimated a total of about 10,000 North Korean troops are in Russia. Seoul and its allies assessed that the number has increased to 11,000, while Ukraine has put the figure higher, at up to 12,000.
“It’s kind of on pins and needles for a lot of different reasons,” said Lindquist. “Of course, this escalation is scary to us all. What’s going to happen in the election next week is on everyone’s mind.”
Besides troops, North Korea also has provided munitions to Russia. Earlier this month, the White House released images it said were of North Korea shipping 1,000 containers of military equipment there by rail.
