The University of Minnesota Extension will offer free Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) training this fall and next spring, helping beef producers across the state get certified. Those who attend any of these workshops will earn a three-year BQA certification, which plays an important role in maintaining high industry standards.
Why BQA Certification Matters
BQA certification has become increasingly important for beef producers. While the program remains voluntary, many processors and major buyers now require it to ensure high-quality care throughout their supply chains. Some companies have implemented their own protocols, requiring producers to be BQA certified if they want to sell cattle to them.
Training Options: Choose the Right One for You
The upcoming online BQA trainings will be held over Zoom, making it easy for producers to participate from anywhere. There are four upcoming sessions to choose from:
- Tuesday, November 26, 2024, 7:00 – 9:00 p.m.
Register here - Tuesday, January 7, 2025, 7:00 – 9:00 p.m.
Register here - Thursday, February 13, 2025, 7:00 – 9:00 p.m.

You only need to attend one session to complete the certification, but it’s important to pre-register in advance. After registering, you’ll receive a secure Zoom link to join the meeting. Without pre-registering, you won’t be able to access the online session.
Who Should Get Certified?
While only one person from each farm needs to be certified, it’s a good idea for everyone who handles fed cattle to complete the training. Having multiple people trained ensures the entire operation follows the BQA standards, promoting better cattle care and safer products.
Other Ways to Get Certified
If the Zoom sessions don’t fit your schedule, you can complete the training anytime online at www.bqa.org. These self-paced modules are free and available whenever it’s convenient for you.
For those who prefer in-person sessions, the University of Minnesota Extension will be announcing additional training dates soon. Check the UMN BQA website or the Minnesota Beef Council’s event page for updates.
