SOUTH BEND, Ind. (KFGO) – Former North Dakota Deputy Attorney General Troy Seibel died of excessive alcohol abuse in Indiana.
KFGO News, through an open records request, obtained a report from South Bend Police on the Sept. 3 death of Seibel, who served as the top deputy of late Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem. Stenehjem died in January 2022.
Seibel resigned shortly after Attorney General Drew Wrigley was appointed as Stenehjem’s replacement. Wrigley had discovered that Seibel’s emails and those of Stenehjem had been deleted with Stenehjem’s former administrative assistant, Liz Brocker, saying that Seibel ordered that they be erased.
South Bend Police say Seibel was not breathing when officers responded to an address for what was described as a “sudden death.” Police say no criminal investigation was conducted.
The St. Joseph County Coroner’s Office Coroner Report says the manner of death was natural and was the result of “complications of chronic ethanol abuse.”
An autopsy was done, but under Indiana law, that report is not public.
Seibel was 48.
A private memorial service was held in Mandan on Sept. 21. He was married with two children.
