GRAND FORKS (KFGO) – Grand Forks Police say a suicidal man was transported to Altru Hospital following an hours-long standoff with police near the Kennedy Bridge.
Shortly before 6 p.m. Sunday, police responded to a report of the suicidal man with a gun who had driven his pickup to the bridge. When police arrived, they heard a single gunshot under the bridge.
Officers closed off the area, including the closure of all traffic on Gateway Driver. Police attempted communication with the man but there was no response.
The Crisis Negotiations Team was able to eventually make contact by cell phone and it appeared the man was about to surrender. However, the man threw two drones that had landed on his pickup which police were using to observe him.
When the man attempted to throw a third drone that was on his pickup, the SWAT team deployed a diversionary device to distract the man while other officers deployed less lethal equipment to stop him from getting back into his truck where his gun was.
He was taken into custody and then to Altru Hospital for mental health treatment. No charges have been filed.
