MOORHEAD, Minn. (KFGO/KVRR) – The union representing teachers in the Moorhead Area Public Schools is apologizing for a political brochure that makes it appear two school board candidates are being endorsed by the Moorhead Area Public School District.
The brochure recently appeared in Moorhead Public School area mailboxes. It endorses two people running for the school board and includes the words “Prepared and paid for by the Moorhead Area Public Schools, 607 3rd St. NE, Dilworth, MN 56529.”
According to county records, the property is owned by Dilworth Mayor Chad Olson, a Moorhead Public High School teacher.
Olson did not respond to a request for comment, but Christine Berg, the president of Education Moorhead, says the postcards contained a big mistake.
“Unfortunately, the postcard includes a serious error. During production, a disclaimer and return address were included that said the piece was from the Moorhead Area Public Schools. We didn’t catch the mistake until it reached the mailboxes in our community,” Berg said.
“We apologize for the error and the confusion that it has caused. In the coming days, Education Moorhead will contact voters by mail and phone to apologize and correct the error.”
Earlier, the school district issued a statement, calling the postcard “fraudulent” and said the matter was being turned over to law enforcement.
“The district wants to make it clear that we had no involvement in the creation, approval or distribution of this mailer. This is a deeply troubling situation, and we are currently exploring legal and law enforcement options to identify and hold accountable those responsible for this fraudulent activity.”
Berg says the orange-and-white postcard was prepared and mailed by Education Minnesota and Education Moorhead, the union of teachers and other educators in the Moorhead public schools. It was not made in collaboration with our endorsed candidates or any other groups.
