A Horace man is facing felony charges after police say he stole construction equipment and led them on a chase through rural Cass County.
52-year-old Scott Adelman was arrested October 8 for felony theft and fleeing, and possession of cocaine.
The Cass County Sheriff’s Office was called to Oxbow to help look for a stolen mini-excavator and dump trailer October 7. Court documents say an employee of the company that owns the equipment followed the driver into Richland County. The employee continued to follow the equipment to a home in Davenport.
Deputies arrived around 1 p.m. They found the trailer and excavator behind a shed. When the deputies got out of their cars, the suspect vehicle drove away quickly. A deputy chased the pickup through rural Cass County on gravel roads, reaching speeds near 85 mph. Due to gravel dust, the deputy had to slow down, and eventually lost sight of the pickup.
Around 4 p.m., a person called dispatch to report an abandoned and damaged pickup in a field. The pickup’s description matched the pickup that had fled earlier. While deputies responded, the person called again to say a man had left in the pickup. Deputies could not locate the vehicle, but ran the plate and learned the pickup was registered to Adelman. The farmer sent pictures of the pickup, which matched the pickup deputies had chased earlier.
Deputies went to Adelman’s home in Horace. Neighbors provided security camera footage of the suspect’s truck with the stolen equipment pulling out of Adelman’s driveway that afternoon.
Adelman was seen driving his dad’s car in Horace the next day. Officers found cocaine on Adelman. and he was arrested. He is in the Cass County Jail.
