ENDERLIN, N.D. (KFGO) – An Enderlin student-athlete is hospitalized at Children’s Hospital in Minneapolis after a freak accident during a high school football game in Mayville.
Luke Wall, 14, is an 8th grader and plays for Enderlin’s varsity team. Late in the second quarter of Friday night’s game, Wall and a teammate were trying to make a tackle.
“As that happened, Luke kind of hyper-extended his (left) knee a little bit and as the other player was trying to tackle the guy with the ball, he kind of rolled into [Wall], hit him with the helmet/back, and kind of got Luke stuck in the turf, and dislocated his knee or kneecap,” Enderlin Area Schools athletic director Calvin Kraft said.
Kraft said Wall was in a great deal of pain, so he was taken to the Mayville hospital. As doctors were examining his leg, they couldn’t find a pulse in his foot. They decided to send Wall to Fargo.
In Fargo, doctors did more testing and still couldn’t get a pulse in his foot. That’s when they made the decision to fly Wall to Minneapolis.
Wall had a ruptured artery in his leg and needed surgery right away.
Kraft said surgeons took part of an artery from Wall’s right leg and put it into his left leg to get blood flowing to his foot again.
Despite hours between when Wall suffered the injury until he went into surgery Saturday morning, Kraft said everything seems to be going well.
“Obviously, now, the main thing is hoping everything heals up that was around it that wasn’t getting any blood flow,” Kraft said.
Kraft has been in contact with the Wall family everyday and said they are taking things one day at a time.
The community has sent a care package and set up a fund to help with medical costs. Kraft said there are a couple of ways to help the family.
“If you’re around a BankNorth, they’d appreciate if you’d walk in or send a check. There’s quite a few BankNorth locations around this area of the state. If you’re not near a BankNorth, you can donate at GoFundMe,” Kraft said.
A link to Wall’s GoFundMe page to make a donation can be found here. Kraft says there will likely be more fundraisers for the family in the near future.
