WASHINGTON, D.C. (KFGO) – Senator Amy Klobuchar is urging the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to address the national shortage of IV solutions caused by Hurricane Helene. This comes after a halt in production at Baxter International’s IV solution plant—the largest in the country—was hit by the storm in Marion, North Carolina.
Many healthcare providers have postponed or canceled elective and nonemergency surgeries to stockpile supplies. Klobuchar warns another plant in Daytona Beach, Florida, could also be compromised by fast-approaching Hurricane Milton.
Baxter is responsible for nearly 60% of IV fluids and dialysis solutions available to U.S. healthcare providers.
