MOORHEAD, Minn (KFGO-KVRR) โ Churches United may have to close its doors by the end of November. This week, the organization was forced to lay off 25% of its full-time staff to save money and keep the mission open.
Pastor Devlyn Brooks was hired in August. He says the non-profit is in desperate need of donations to stay open
โWe have an immediate need, and thereโs the long-term need,โ Brooks said Friday. โWeโre still in that immediate need. And until we can ensure that we are keeping our doors open itโs really hard to find donors that want to come in and help us establish a permanent funding source.
Recently, Brooks and his team at Churches United decided to let go of part of the admin team to build up that financial stability.
โWe looked at two criteria, is a position tied to funding that we receive. And secondarily is that position tied directly to the care of our guests,โ Brooks said.
Even though the cuts will not help keep the facility opened, Brooks said itโs something that has to be done. The mission provides food, helps with case management, and helps find permanent housing for the homeless. Brooks says without help, the city will have to do take on many of those responsibilities themselves.
โThey either help paying for these support of the services now or youโre going to be paying for multiple on the backend.โ
Brooks hopes to raise the funds necessary to keep all their services open, but if they cannot they will need to close Dorothy Day Food Pantry and their emergency shelter, Micahโs Mission.
