The ongoing strike at East Coast and Gulf Coast ports is the biggest one of its kind in almost 50 years. Yahoo says the stoppage has blocked the unloading of container ships from Maine down to Texas, with a backlog of ships lined up outside of major U.S. ports.
The White House said Thursday that it believed progress was being made despite no scheduled talks. Port owners are feeling pressure from the administration to get the strike settled and signaled they’re open to resuming discussions.
Everstream Analytics says at least 45 container vessels have been unable to unload cargo and were anchored outside the strike-hit East and Gulf Coast ports by Wednesday. Jena Santoro of Everstream says the vessel backlog could double by the end of the week if the stoppage continues, and the resulting congestion could take weeks or months to clear. The strike includes 45,000 workers from Maine to Texas.
