WASHBURN, N.D. (KFGO) – Ian Cramer, the son of U.S. Sen. Kevin Cramer, plans to plead guilty to charges related to a crash that killed a North Dakota deputy.
Cramer faces a number of charges, including homicide while fleeing a peace officer, reckless endangerment, preventing arrest, and drug possession.
On Dec. 6 last year, Cramer was involved in a chase after police say he stole his mother’s vehicle when she brought him to the hospital for mental health concerns. When his mother got out of the vehicle, Cramer got into the driver’s seat and crashed through a closed door in the hospital’s ambulance bay.
Deputies tried to stop Cramer about 70 miles away in Hazen, but he refused to stop and a pursuit began.
During the pursuit, Cramer reached speeds over 100 miles an hour and continued driving even after deputies used spike strips to deflate the vehicle’s tires. More spikes were set up and Cramer swerved and then crashed head-on into Mercer County Sheriff’s deputy Paul Martin’s patrol vehicle.
Martin, 53, was behind the patrol vehicle and the impact launched him about 100 feet. Martin died at a hospital.
Cramer’s change of plea hearing is set for Friday.
