FARGO (KFGO KVRR) – Senator Kevin Cramer says B-1 bombers from Ellsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota could temporarily be moved to Grand Forks Air Force Base. Cramer says an environmental assessment should be done by October 8, likely clearing the way for the temporary move.
He says he has been working on it for better than a year.
The Air Force will relocate 17 bombers and around 800 crew members to provide maintenance and support for the bomber operations for ten months. Ellsworth is gearing up to host the new B-21 Raider as B-1 and B-2 bombers will eventually be retired.
Grand Forks Air Force Base last hosted B-1 bombers from the mid-80s to mid-90s.
The base now focuses on UAV operations including the RQ-4 Global Hawk.
