Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned angler, you won’t want to miss this
workshop with fishing guide Brady Baxter in Maplewood State Park on Saturday, August
24.
Baxter is a five-time recipient of the Master Angler Award from the Minnesota Fishing
Hall of Fame. The award is given to anglers who catch fish of extraordinary size and
weight. “My awards were issued for a 51” and 53” musky, a 55” lake sturgeon, and a 29”
and 32” walleye,” said Baxter. “The most interesting fact is four of the five award-
winning fish came from Detroit Lake!”
Like many anglers, Baxter’s grandfather introduced him to the sport when he was
young. “I started fishing with my grandfather when I was five. I’ve been fishing
Minnesota lakes for over 35 years,” said Baxter, who has lived by Morris and in Hawley,
Detroit Lakes, and Moorhead. He currently lives in Hawley and commutes to the Detroit
Lakes area, where he owns and manages Baxter Guide Service. “I’ve guided for six
years and on many lakes in the area.” Baxter guides as far north as Detroit Lakes and
Lake Sallie, south to Lake Lida, and multiple lakes west of Highway 59, including
Pelican Lake and the Cormorant Lakes. He also owns Lakes Golf Simulator and
teaches high school social studies in Detroit Lakes.
From locating the best fishing spot to choosing the right lure and tactic at the right time,
anglers will leave this seminar with a game plan to catch more fish on any lake. Baxter's
presentation will cover most native game fish species. He will also share his perspective
on the latest fishing equipment and boats.
Friends of Maplewood State Park are hosting this seminar, which will be held at the
Josh Hanson Memorial Picnic Shelter from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, August 24.
The event is free but requires a current State Park vehicle pass.
