The group will be marking storm drains with markers that say, “No Dumping, Drains to River” and placing door hangers on residents’ doors to reduce storm water pollution going to the Red River. River Keepers staff will train you in at the beginning. Meet other River Keepers volunteers while helping the community LEARN, SUSTAIN and ENJOY the Red River! Pre-registration is required. * On-the-Water Cleanup – Help us pick up garbage along the banks of the Red River in a canoe on Monday, August 12 from 6-8 p.m. Volunteers must have enough experience canoeing to be comfortable reaching over the canoe to pick up trash and do not mind getting wet/muddy. Please do not wear flip flops and wear clothes that can get wet and muddy. Pre-registration is required. There are a limited number of spots available. * Activity Assistants – Teach our River Crime Lab activity (it’s easy to learn!) at the “Be My Neighbor Day” event at the Fargo Civic Center Plaza on Thursday, August 22. Shifts are from 11 – 1:30 and 1:30 – 4 p.m.
* T-shirt Tote Project – Significant progress has been made over the past few months in transforming T-shirts into totes. We have a few more boxes of finished totes that need to be labeled. Consider scheduling a day and time to come into our office and work for an hour or two or if you own an iron, you can take home supplies to work on. This project was started to reduce the number of plastic bags found in or near the Red River. Totes are distributed for free and are used for outreach and education at local community events and stores. Let us know if you would like to volunteer by contacting Kim at Kimberly@riverkeepers.org or 701-356-8915.

July Highlights
Because river levels were too fast for beginner paddlers, the Discover the Red River Paddling Excursion was changed to an Urban Hike. Participants said they enjoyed the informational walk. Project partner: Moorhead Parks and Recreation.
We had a booth at the Red River Market to share information about our upcoming events and activities, and a fish identification activity for attendees to test their knowledge of fish found in the Red River.
The Moorhead Library invited us to their Summer Learning Experience where about 40 youth participated in various activities including our River Crime Lab to learn about stormwater pollution by investigating a trash crime scene, Stream Sense to practice using their senses to explore the Red River, and Incredible Journey to simulate the movement of water in the water cycle.
The RiverArts Fishing Clinic had many smiles from youth as they learned how to tie knots, cast, handle fish, and how to be safe and good anglers. Project partner: FM Walleyes Unlimited.
