HUDSON, Wis. (KFGO/WCCO) – Nicolae Miu, who was found guilty in April of stabbing several people including one fatally on the Apple River in St. Croix County two years ago, was sentenced to 20 years in prison on Wednesday morning.
Miu, 54, faced up to 97 years in prison after he was charged and convicted of first-degree reckless homicide in the killing of Stillwater-native Isaac Schuman, four counts of first-degree recklessly endangering safety in the stabbings of A.J. Martin, Dante Carlson, Anthony “Tony” Carlson and Ryhley Mattison, and battery of Madison Coen.
Video captured from the July 30, 2022 incident showed Miu claiming to be searching for a lost cellphone as he approached a group of young tubers. That group of tubers, as seen in the video, began yelling at Miu and accusing him of “looking for little girls.”
The video goes on to show portions of Miu’s knife attack that claimed Schuman’s life and injured several others.
Miu’s attorneys argued he acted in self-defense, with prosecutor Karl Anderson rejected during the sentencing.
“Even after he stabbed multiple people, even after AJ was disemboweled, Nicolae Miu instead of going back to his group, walks away from them, up to Dante and stabs him in the chest,” Anderson said. “There’s nothing that that shows other than vengeance because Dante had punched him.”
Victim impact statements were given prior to Miu’s sentencing on Wednesday, but St. Croix County Circuit Judge R. Michael Waterman did not allow the statements to be shown on cameras placed inside the courtroom.
Schuman’s mother, Alina Hernandez, testified during the eight-day trial and was the first to give a victim impact statement during. Schuman’s father, sister, and stepfather also spoke.
Miu was also given a chance to speak prior to Judge Waterman handing down the sentence.
“I would like to start by letting you know how deeply sorry I am and always will be for the real fact that Isaac is not with you anymore and that I was directly involved in his very tragic and unimaginable death at any early age,” Miu said. “I never meant for these tragedies to occur. My soul is broken, my heart is very heavy. I will never be the same carrying such a heavy burden and sorrow. I pray to God for forgiveness and compassion and love for everyone effected directly and indirectly by the outcome of this tragic event. I’m hoping you appreciate how much I’m sorry for the outcome of those events.”
