With “Twisters” blowing into theaters this week, I thought it was time to take a look at some of the great Weather Disaster movies – in my humble opinion. There really is something special in the forecast when you can distract yourself by action filled flicks showcasing Mother Nature’s fury!
In no particular order, here are my Top 5: Weather Disaster Flicks
TWISTER – 1996
No brainer here. This movie has it all – adventure, action, science and a cow flying through the air. Quick story, when I saw this movie in 1996, our theater had to be evacuated because of an actual tornado! This movie also has one of the best scenes involving steak. Every. Time. I. See. It…I want steak. If you had the chance, in Disney World at Hollywood Studios, there was an amazing “Twister Experience.”
THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW – 2004
What happens when the planet needs to reset after an extreme global storm? A LOT! Its got family, mass migration, the New York Public Library…WOLVES! The action from director Roland Emmerich (who is a master of this genre) really shines as things get more and more ridiculous as the situations get dire. Not that you need to rewatch this every year…but give it a shot…when it is snowing outside.
DANTE’S PEAK – 1997
I know, technically this is a volcano movie – but it also deals with the ash cloud and heck breaks loose before the lava even gets to the small mountain town. There is a lot of fun to be found as Pierce Brosnan (during his peak as James Bond) helps the mayor of small town (and they make a big deal of how small of a town) played by Linda Hamilton and her family survive. There is a coffee scene that I think of anytime I see someone who is too caffeinated!
THE PERFECT STORM – 2000
You never thought there could be a movie about the drama of commercial fishing…until George Clooney and crew brought you The Perfect Storm. This is based on a true story and the cast is PACKED with heavy hitters. This one is not only a powerhouse of how unrelenting the ocean can be during a storm, but the human drama as well.
CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS – 2009
This animated movie is not just for kids. The laughs are real, the fun runs throughout and the voice acting is top notch. A loner inventor puts his small island town on the map after he invents a machine that turns weather into food…yeah, you read that right. But seriously, give it a chance!
