GRAND FORKS, N.D. (KFGO) – An Alabama woman arrested for DUI is also facing a bribery charge after she allegedly offered to pay a Grand Forks Police officer if he let her go.
According to court records, the officer arrested 34-year-old Demetria Clayton of Birmingham, Alabama after a report of a possible drunk driver in a semi-truck in downtown Grand Forks.
The officer says he could smell alcohol on Clayton, who admitted to drinking alcohol, had blood-shot, watery eyes, and failed a field sobriety test.
After she was arrested, Clayton asked the officer if they could speak off camera. That’s when she allegedly asked if the officer was willing to negotiate.
When the officer asked Clayton if she was offering him money to let her go, she offered him $1,000. The officer asked Clayton to clarify that she was offering him money to not make the arrest and let her go, to which she replied, “yeah.”
When the officer told Clayton he couldn’t accept her offer, Clayton offered him up to $3,000.
According to court records, Clayton said she didn’t want to lose her license or have the arrest on her record. She told the officer, “I can drive and make that back, and you have 3000 in your pocket.”
The officer again explained he couldn’t accept the offer before asking Clayton to take a breathalyzer test, which she refused.
Clayton has been charged with DUI, DUI test refusal, and bribery.
