FARGO (KFGO) – Former North Dakota Republican state Sen. Ray Holmberg will plead guilty to traveling to the Czech Republic to have sex with children.
In a plea agreement, Holmberg admits that he repeatedly traveled from North Dakota to Prague between 2011 and 2016 to have sex with adolescent-aged children and that there is enough evidence to find him guilty at trial.
The maximum penalty for the crime is 30 years in prison, but as part of the plea agreement, the U.S. Justice Department will ask for a sentence on the low end of the spectrum. The Justice Department will also move to dismiss a charge of receiving child pornography.
In November 2021, investigators searched Holmberg’s Grand Forks home. The following April, Holmberg told the legislature he would be stepping down from the Senate. Holmberg was arrested in October of last year and indicted in November.
Holmberg, 80, also waives his right to an appeal.
A sentencing date has not been set.
