MINNEAPOLIS (KFGO/WCCO) – A man is dead after he was shot by Minneapolis police in south Minneapolis on Wednesday night.
Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said MPD officers responded to two 911 calls about a man with a gun. The first call came in around 9:03 p.m. from the 3000 block of 29th Avenue and the caller told dispatch that a man with a handgun was talking to himself.
A second call at 9:19 p.m. from the 3400 block of Hiawatha reported that an armed man was waving a gun and acting irrational.
O’Hara said that officers arrived in marked squad cars and that a foot chase quickly ensued. There was a confrontation a short time later and three of the four responding officers used deadly force.
“The male was armed with a handgun in his hand,” O’Hara said. “The officers gave multiple, clear commands to drop the gun. The suspect did not comply.”
The man shot by police was pronounced dead at a hospital.
No officers were injured.
“I have no reason to think that this is anything other than a justifiable and lawful use of force by police officers,” added O’Hara.
O’Hara added that the man’s gun was recovered and noted that it appeared to be jammed when asked whether or not the individual fired the weapon.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is handling the investigation.
