The debate over whether Donald Trump is guilty of a felony is over. A jury made up of 12 of his peers found him so on all 34 counts brought against him, making Trump the first president ever convicted of a felony.
Of course, Trump will appeal. In fact, he already has publicly. In a press conference today, he used all the bullet words needed to brand into his supporters that he’s innocent. Words like corrupt, sham, kangaroo, and shameless just to name a few. None of that will overturn the conviction though. He will always be the first President ever to be found guilty of committing a felony. Thirty-four of them to be exact.
But Trump isn’t the only one using those bullet points. North Dakota’s Governor, Doug Burgum, is echoing the same. As instructed, he’s in New York doing exactly what Donald wants, like undermining our judicial system. Burgum is doing everything he can to help a desperate man, that after July 11, could be in jail.
In the hours since the conviction, I’ve been asked a number of times whether this will help or hurt Trump politically. I think it’ll hurt. The diehard MAGA base that would follow him through the gates of hell couldn’t care less. And the Americans, so disgusted they can’t stand the sight of him, were never going to vote for him before the conviction. But that small group that hasn’t made up their minds yet, this might affect.
The suburban housewife that is sick of what he brings into their lives now has one more reason to say no. They’re the ones raising and have raised children to respect the rules of law. And the system of justice it represents.
It’s just too bad Trump didn’t do the same.
Good riding with you,
Joel
