FARGO (KFGO) – After more than eight years, the first woman to work as an operator for the City of Fargo’s Street Department is moving on.
Brandi Anderson started with the City’s Forestry Department before making the switch to the Street Crew where she has operated various equipment plowing snow and repairing streets.
Before becoming an operator with the Street Department, Anderson worked for four years in the City’s Forestry Department. She says she’s taken pride in being the first woman on the Street Department.
Anderson says other women have come and gone from the Street Crew, but right now she’s the only one.
Anderson’s last day with the City of Fargo is Friday. She starts as an operator with the North Dakota Department of Transportation next week. She says she’ll miss the hands-on aspect of the job, and leaving is more emotional than she thought it would be, mainly because of the connection she has with her co-workers.
“Not only in this department, but other departments. I talk to (people in) Water, Garbage, Sanitary. With my dad being the supervisor at the landfill, it was nice to work with him for the last 12 years.”
During her time with the Street Department, Anderson says she has operated road graders and loader plows for snow removal, and has worked on the asphalt and concrete crews repairing streets.
Anderson says she will do similar work with the state. She says plowing highways with no curbs or lighting will be a learning curve.
Anderson starts with the State Monday and will work out of Richland County where she lives.
