FARGO (KFGO/KVRR) – A West Fargo-based bird rescue is closed indefinitely following the discovery of a highly contagious and potentially deadly parrot disease.
In a social media post, the Center for Avian Adoption, Rescue and Education says Avian Circovirus Disease was discovered in a male parrot that was brought to the shelter in December. The disease was confirmed by a blood test after the parrot began to lose its feathers.
“We have discussed this matter with our veterinarian and done in-depth research and have found that proper shelter protocol for this type of situation is lacking,” the shelter says. “However, in an attempt to determine the extent to which this one parrot might have infected others, the shelter will be closed indefinitely and the shelter parrots quarantined. There will be no visitors other than our volunteer cleaning crew, and there will be no incoming nor outgoing parrots.”
The shelter will also be contacting the owners of parrots that may have been exposed. Testing will be offered to parrots who may have been exposed during the timeline in question.
The shelter’s avian warehouse store will be closed Wednesday, May 8 and Saturday, May 11 to conduct testing, cleaning, and disinfecting.
“Pending testing results, we may be able to re-open our store during the period the shelter remains closed to the public,” the shelter says. “Right now, we ask for everyone’s patience as we work hard to move past this.”
