VALLEY CITY, N.D. (KFGO/News Dakota) – A railroad classic chugged through Valley City Wednesday afternoon.
The Empress 2816, a 4-6-4 Hudson steam locomotive, is making its way from Calgary, Alberta to Mexico City, Mexico. The train is part of Canadian Pacific Kansas City’s Final Spike Anniversary Tour, celebrating rail history and sparking the excitement of rail fans.
Railroad enthusiasts in Valley City waited for the Empress for more than three hours before the train rolled through town around 1 Wednesday afternoon.
The train left Calgary on April 24, and is on track to be in Mexico city on June 4. It will pass through Alexandria, Detroit Lakes, and Thief River Falls in late June on its way back to Calgary.
The trek is the first steam-powered passenger train in North America to go through Canada, the U.S. and Mexico in a single trip.
