MOORHEAD (KFGO) – Moorhead state Sen. Rob Kupec says, if he were in fellow Democratic Sen. Nicole Mitchell’s position, he would probably resign.
Mitchell, of Woodbury, is charged with burglary after allegedly breaking into her stepmother’s home in Detroit Lakes last week.
Kupec says he understands it’s the last three weeks of the session, but he feels Mitchell should have discussions with leaders and constituents in her district because the evidence doesn’t play well for her.
“She needs to have that serious conversation and seriously be thinking about, maybe… ‘I need to set this aside, focus on my family, focus on my legal issues, and not also be distracted by my senate work,’” Kupec says.
Kupec says lawmakers need to be held to the highest ethical standards. He added that an ethics committee will meet before Mitchell’s trial.
“For her, that’s probably not good because there will be things that probably come out in that ethics committee that she’d probably rather hold off until trial or not have disclosed at a trial,” Kupec says. “That does put her in kind of a difficult situation in terms of her legal matters, but those are things we need to look into. There is a process and certainly as we move down the road, as things change, you could see how – at some point as a body – we could say, ‘you know what? You need to leave.’”
Kupec says if Mitchell did step down, it would create a tie on the Senate floor, and would take a special election to fill that position.
