MOORHEAD (KFGO) – A large tip and firing at Moorhead Freez has set off a firestorm on social media.
In a Facebook post, Seth and Lisa Swenson say their daughter, Emily, was recently let go because a customer put $100 in the tip jar and drove away. They say their daughter had told the customer that she couldn’t accept the tip.
Moorhead Freez has a policy that it’s a violation to accept bills over $20 as payment, according to the Swensons.
Lorraine Moore, owner of Moorhead Freez, gave Emily a warning notice saying some customers are elderly and could be dealing with dementia and that “no one in their right frame of mind tips $100 at a place where every menu item is under $12.”
The Moorhead Freeze said in a Facebook post: “We did not terminate the adult at will employee of 5 years for accepting a tip. There’s more to the story. We won’t go into details, it’s a personal matter.” That post has thousands of comments and reactions, almost all negative towards the business.
Hundreds on social media have taken offense to the business’s statements and written warning, understanding them to mean Moore believes all elderly people have dementia, and can’t be trusted to make their own financial decisions.
“I am 65yrs old and definitely do not have dementia. I resent the idea that if I leave a $100 tip for some ice cream that I must be ill,” one Facebook user wrote.
The business’s Facebook has been flooded with negative reviews, driving its 5-star rating to 1.8/5 stars at the time this story was publised.
The Swensons say Emily is ready to move on and wishes nothing but the best for her friends at Moorhead Freez. She was in her 5th year working at the restaurant.
