FARGO (KFGO/North Dakota Monitor) – The executive director of the North Dakota Republican Party has withdrawn from a race for a North Dakota state Senate seat.
Andrew Nyhus said he filed to run for the Senate in District 44 in north Fargo after no other candidate emerged at the district convention on Sunday, a day before the Monday filing deadline.
With no other candidate, Nyhus decided to volunteer to be the endorsed candidate. He said he reconsidered and used the North Dakota provision that allows a candidate to withdraw within 48 hours.
“Why put eyes on me when my job is to put eyes on other people?” Nyhus said. “The other thing is I don’t really have political ambition; it was more a sense of duty.”
Josh Boschee is the Democratic candidate for Senate, giving up his seat in the North Dakota House.
Democrat Merrill Piepkorn is the current senator in District 44, but he is running for governor.
