In an effort to prevent domestic cattle from being exposed to highly pathogenic avian influenza virus (HPAI, more specifically avian influenza Type A H5N1), over a dozen states have restricted cattle imports from states where the virus is known to have infected dairy cows.
North Dakota Ag Commissioner Doug Goehring told KFGO his department is going to require an import certificate for dairy livestock.
โIf theyโre going to come to the state, there may even be a short quarantine period.โ
โWe donโt believe we have an issue or a concern right now. We have very few dairy replacement heifers that come out of that area. We are aware that there are some replacement heifers that do come into the upper Midwest, out of Texas and Arizona.โ
Goehring said officials โwill watch and monitor not only the herd in the state, [and] herds that are adjacent to us in other states, but across the nation.โ
