BISMARCK, N.D. (North Dakota Monitor) – The Libertarian Party of North Dakota has gained ballot access for the 2024 election, the Secretary of State’s Office announced Thursday.
In a news release, the office said it approved the party’s petition for ballot access after verifying more than 7,500 signatures of qualified voters in the state, more than the 7,000 signatures needed. The office rejected 527 signatures for undisclosed reasons.
The Libertarian Party of North Dakota will appear alongside the North Dakota Republican Party and North Dakota Democratic-NPL Party on the June 11 primary ballot and have their winning primary candidates included in the Nov. 5 general election. The filing deadline for candidates is April 8.
The Secretary of State’s Office also indicated the party will be allowed to submit president and vice president candidates for the general election ballot.
The party must now submit rosters of their political party offices and state headquarters information to the Secretary of State’s Office, the news release said.
If a Libertarian Party presidential or gubernatorial candidate gets at least 5% of the statewide vote, the party will be automatically included in the following statewide election cycle, the Secretary of State’s Office said. However, if the party fails to garner 5% of the statewide vote in one of those races, members must again circulate a ballot access petition and gather 7,000 signatures to have the party’s access reinstated.
The Libertarian Party last appeared on the North Dakota ballot in 2020, with candidates for president, U.S. House, governor and lieutenant governor, though none got more than 4% of votes. The party also ran candidates for every statewide race in 2016.
