ALEXANDRIA, Minn. (KFGO) – A man is in jail after stealing two vehicles and leading officers on a pursuit in west central Minnesota.
The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office says Christopher Shappell of Monticello, Minnesota is accused of stealing a vehicle from a convenience store in Alexandria, abandoning that vehicle at a convenience store in Brandon, and stealing another vehicle.
Douglas County deputies responded to the second theft report and learned the owner’s cell phone was still in the vehicle.
Deputies found the vehicle through a cell phone tracking app, but when they attempted a stop, Shappell fled at high speed. Deputies stopped the pursuit for safety reasons, but continued tracking the phone.
Shappell fled into neighboring Otter Tail County before returning to Douglas County where a state trooper deployed spike strips causing him to lose control of the vehicle and enter the ditch.
Shappell was arrested for vehicle theft, fleeing, and several outstanding warrants. He’s being held in the Douglas County jail.
Alexandria and Parkers Prairie Police Departments, Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office, West Central Minnesota Drug and Violent Crime Task Force, and Minnesota State Patrol assisted the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.
