ALBERTVILLE, Minn. – As Minnesota observed National School Breakfast Week, state lawmakers are talking about enhancing the free school meal program with a free carton of milk for every student who brings their lunch from home.
Glenn Ritter, a food service supervisor with the St. Michael-Albertville School District says this could limit some of the unhealthy beverages they sometimes see students bring in their lunch from home, such as soda or other sugary drinks.
Officials predict it will also reduce food waste, like when students take a free lunch with no intention of eating it, just to get a carton of milk.
Some Republicans warn, if a looming budget deficit forces state funding cuts, struggling school districts would have to absorb the cost of free milk.
