WASHINGTON (KFGO) – As the National Park Service nears a decision on what to do with about 200 wild horses in Theodore National Park, horse advocates have been working to make sure the animals stay.
One of those advocates is Sen. John Hoeven, who announced Friday that congress passed legislation regarding the horses.
“This legislation directs the National Park Service to keep horses in the Theodore National Park,” Hoeven said. “The timing is important because we expect a decision from the National Park Service next month.”
That decision could be to keep the horses, reduce the population quickly, or reduce the population gradually.
Theodore Roosevelt National Park superintendent Angie Richman said that even if the horses stay, they would still need to be reduced to under 60 due to a 1978 environmental assessment.
