HAWLEY, Minn. (KFGO) โ A major overnight fire in Hawley. It was brought under control at around 7 a.m. Monday. The blaze was reported at 11:01 p.m. Sunday.
17 fire departments from as far away as Moorhead and Detroit Lakes responded to the call at Hawley Elevator. The elevator contained corn.
Police Chief Joe Backlund says there was initial concern that embers from the large blaze would spread to other buildings. Backlund says he believes the elevator is leased and mostly used by one farmer. School was canceled Monday to preserve the cityโs water supply.
Mayor Sean Mork says with the amount of water used to battle the flames, residents were asked to limit their water use, but those restrictions were eased. At one point, fire crews were pouring hundreds of gallons of water a minute on the fire.
The fire was reported by a passing BNSF Railway crew. No injuries were reported.
The state fire marshalโs office is investigating.
