FARGO (KFGO) โ The Fargo Fire Department released its 2023 annual report, offering a summary of the fire departmentโs highs and lows, including some of the challenges. The report shows firefighters responded to more than 14,500 calls for service.
Fire Chief Steve Dirksen says there were 288 fires last year. Smoking materials and cooking caused the largest number of those. There were 91 structure fires. Forty of those fires were intentionally set, the most in five years. There were two civilian fire deaths and eight civilian injuries. Five firefighters were also injured.
Chief Dirksen says the number of total responses each fire station makes is also growing significantly. He says one of the areas of particular concern is the downtown area. He says the number of calls has increased for years and itโs getting to the point that additional staff and resources will be needed to deal with the downtown calls. There were more than 3,700 calls went to the downtown fire station last year, more than other city stations.
