ST. PAUL, Minn. (KFGO) – Sentencing is set for late March for a Fergus Falls man convicted in the murder of his girlfriend in St. Paul.
Former Lake Region Healthcare Clinic Nurse Practitioner Matthew Ecker was found guilty by a Ramsey County District Court jury of second-degree intentional murder in the shooting death of Alexandra Pennig. The 45-year-old Ecker had been free on bond. He was taken into custody following the verdict.
Ecker was accused of killing 32-year-old Pennig with his handgun in a downtown St. Paul apartment in Dec. 2022. Ecker told police that he called 911 minutes after Pennig shot herself in the head in the bathroom of her apartment.
Ecker’s attorney argued that there was no physical evidence to support the verdict. The prosecutor said Ecker gave inconsistent statements early in the investigation.
The judge scheduled sentencing for March 29.
