ST. PAUL, Minn. – Minnesotans could see some relief from their medical debt thanks to a new bill being considered in the upcoming legislative session that begins Monday.
The Minnesota Debt Fairness bill would ban the withholding of medical services due to unpaid debt, and stop medical debt from being reported to credit bureaus.
“Don’t get me wrong, if you borrow money, you should pay it back, but we should also all agree that we shouldn’t punish people for getting sick,” Attorney General Keith Ellison, who co-developed the bill said. “We should all agree that debt-collection systems that make it harder for people to pay back what they owe does nobody any good.”
Ellison said every Minnesotan should have access to the care they need without worrying about going bankrupt.
