GRAFTON, N.D. (KFGO) – A Grafton Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS) teacher received quite a shock Wednesday when she learned she had just won a $25,000 Milken Educator Award.
Milken Educator Awards Vice President Stephanie Bishop presented the award to Katelyn Gorder in front of a room full of her students, colleagues, and several past North Dakota Milken Award winners.
Gorder is a Grafton native and has been teaching at Grafton High School since 2022 after eight years of teaching in Montana.
“Katelyn Gorder is an exemplar of teaching excellence, and I am so pleased the Milken Family Foundation has agreed to honor her,” North Dakota State Superintendent of Schools Kirsten Baesler said. “This comes at a time when we are redoubling our efforts to encourage young people to become teachers, and to provide the support they need to establish a career.”
Known as the “Oscars of teaching,” the Milken Award is presented to educators in the early to mid stages of their careers.
Gorder will travel to Los Angeles in June for the Milken Educator Awards Forum where she will be able to network with other current and past Milken Award winners.
