ST. PAUL, Minn. – Minnesotans living in rental housing welcomed a new package of tenant protection laws this year, including pet protection with the Anti-Declaw Law.
Representative Maria Isa Perez-Vega said, before the law, landlords could demand cats and dogs be declawed or devocalized.
“I didn’t even know that devocalizing a dog was a surgical procedure that landlords could tell folks, ‘you can’t come in here unless you do this,’” Perez-Vega said.
Perez-Vega, a long-time renters-rights advocate and champion of animal welfare, said the new law ensures responsible pet ownership doesn’t come at the cost of unnecessary procedures.
