WILLISTON, N.D. (KFGO) – The mayor of Williston has joined the list of those who believe a North Dakota state representative should resign from the legislature.
Republican Nico Rios used homophobic, anti-immigrant, and profane language during a traffic stop when he was arrested for drunken driving last month.
Mayor Howard Klug said Rios was arrested and that will play out in the courts, but how Rios treated law enforcement during the incident is what Klug has an issue with.
“What he said after that – and what he continues to portray because he won’t resign – I believe that his apology to the state of North Dakota and everybody else was pretty thin,” Mayor Howard Klug said.
The majority leader of the state house, party leadership, and the executive committee in Rios’ legislative district have all asked for his resignation. Rios has refused, saying he plans to seek treatment for alcoholism and consider his options in the future.
