BRAINERD, Minn. (KFGO/WCCO) – The Crow Wing County Board of Commissioners approved a resolution outlining their opposition to the new Minnesota state flag Tuesday.
Three commissioners voted to approve, one voted against the resolution, and one voted ‘present.’
Among those upset is Crow Wing County Commissioner Paul Koering, who says changing the flag is whitewashing the state’s history.
Others in the county also shared their thoughts on the flag during a public hearing.
“This thing right here, you can’t convince me that that represents us up here in Crow Wing County. I’m just going to state the obvious – that is awful. That is an awful design. I completely reject it, and it will never be my flag,” Crow Wing County resident and Minnesota State Rep. Ben Davis said.
The new flag, featuring two shades of blue, a star, and a profile of the state itself, was approved last month following a very public process that included the creation of a new state seal.
The change in flag comes as many feel the current seal portrayed on it contains racist images. The new flag and seal will be officially adopted on May 11 – the 166th anniversary of Minnesota becoming a state.
The Crow Wing County Board of Commissioners is planning on sending a letter to Gov. Walz and other state leaders.
The reporter here uses unbalanced language saying ” many feel the imagery is racist ” He fails to inform if “many” equates to the “majority” or what exactly “many” actually signifies. Beyond that the current flag and seal are tied to Minnesota’s Statehood in 1858. The new designs have no relevance to Minnesota Statehood. If someone has an issue with the events leading Statehood perhaps they should find a State that has a history more to their taste.
I like the new design, the people that are complaining do not fly the MN flag, and most do not know what’s even on it,they are just being ignorant to change!
Tell me David how does this represent mn
I could not agree more with Representative Davis. It looks like a Somalia flag. If St Paul
says this flag represents Minnesota they’re full of BS.
It shows nothing of Minnesota. In no way does it Represents anything of Minnesota. Nothing! Nothing
at all. It is an embarrassment.
Are democrats trying to lock up all the Somali voters?
If they wanted to change the state flag. Have to be a Legal Citizens of the United States. And a citizen and residents of the State of Minnesota. And we vote on it. Not 8 liberals in St Paul. The Republicans weren’t allowed to vote. The tax payers of the State of Minnesota decide. Only thing this flag is good is starting camp fires.
