VALLEY CITY, N.D (KFGO News Dakota) Two men had to be rescued after a sheet of ice broke away from the shores of Lake Ashtabula north of Valley City Saturday night.
“Two individuals had walked out and must have pulled their ice shed out there, it had lights on it, sometime in the afternoon and they were fishing and they heard a loud crack, bang, whatever, (they) came out a little bit later and looked and the ice was gone from the shore to about 100 yards out into the lake,” said Valley City Fire Chief Scott Magnuson. They used social media to notify others since they were not able to make a cellphone call from the location.
Magnuson said it took rescue crews more than two hours to bring the men to safety. Members of the fire department put on water-rescue suits and used a boat and ropes to rescue the pair. No one was injured.
