
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO KFGO) – More charges are filed against the son of a former Minnesota lawmaker in connection with a car crash that killed five women earlier this year.
Derrick John Thompson is now facing federal fentanyl dealing charges. According to authorities, police found fentanyl in pill and powdered form inside the rental car Thompson was driving when it collided into the vehicle carrying the five women.
Thompson already faces other charges, including illegally owning a firearm as a felon. In September, it was reported he was negotiating a plea deal with the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office.
His father is former Minnesota state Representative John Thompson, who served one term in St. Paul.
Derrick Thompson, a convicted felon, faces faces five counts of criminal vehicular homicide in the deaths of the friends aged 17 to 20. Thompson’s accused of driving a rented vehicle 100 miles per hour Interstate 35W.
He allegedly passed a state trooper, ran a red light, and then smashed into the victims’ car while exiting onto Lake Street 95 miles per hour.
The victims were Sabiriin Ali, 17; Sahra Gesaade, 20; Salma Abdikadir, 20; Sagal Hersi, 19; and Siham Adam, 19.
