ST. PAUL, Minn. – Gov. Tim Walz said the Minnesota legislature will determine whether it puts a state constitutional amendment protecting abortion on the ballot next year.
Walz said “the issue of individual sovereignty over personal health decisions is not going away”.
“When the legislature comes back, one of the things is making sure that those protections are codified in a way that ensures them going forward,” Walz said. “I think it will probably be a point of discussion.”
The Democrat-controlled legislature put abortion protections into state law during the last legislative session, but analysts say a constitutional amendment involves a different political calculus – whether putting such a measure on the ballot in a presidential election year will bring more Republican voters to the polls.
