MINNEAPOLIS – Two Minnesota men were accidentally shot and wounded Sunday morning in separate accidents by children during the youth hunting season the past weekend.
The first shooting occurred just before 8 a.m. northwest of the Twin Cities according to the Sherbourne County Sheriff’s Office.
A 45-year-old man from Becker Township was with his 12-year-old in a deer stand. She had just successfully shot a deer when she accidentally fired another round, striking her dad in the leg.
Another member of their family who was present applied a tourniquet to his leg before first responders arrived. The man was taken to North Memorial Health in Robbinsdale for treatment.
The Hubbard County Sheriff’s Office says the second shooting happened just before 10 a.m. in Helga Township, just south of Bemidji.
A 50-year-old man had just taken a 10-year-old boy out deer hunting and was explaining how to unload a bolt-action hunting rifle. The boy accidentally pulled the trigger, and a round pierced both of the victim’s buttocks.
The victim was taken to Sanford Hospital in Bemidji before he was airlifted to later airlifted to Sanford Medical Center in Fargo because of the seriousness of the injuries.
Both shootings happened during youth hunting events.
